I tried to get to the middle of Angel, to the center of his sick human's soul, his crazy larcenist's soul, his great broody addict's Slayer-abandoning soul, I never really succeeded because I hadn't learned something yet, and what I hadn't learned was what I had been trying to learn from that first trip on, that trip he was persuaded to take after he failed to have truly free and open and exuberant sex and flameproof picnics in the sun and therefore proved that he was not a very suitable boyfriend to a Slayer, driving him to leave Buffy and come to LA, and meet up with me, that trip, that trip I was persuaded to take after I'd walked away from the Council and left my position in Sunnydale and gathered up a few things on a motorcycle and taken up rogue demon hunting and started off in search of the LA night, and the LA day, and even the LA mid-afternoon, and some hard LA truth buried under all the sickly-sweet bloody layers of LA madness that were coating the city in those days just into the millennium when everything seemed possible and every little circumstance seemed to be leading a straight line to something good and redeeming but ended up just to be a big one-way sign pointing to a big hellmouth in the ground that eventually opened up and swallowed everything good and innocent we had...
